This year we decided to start a new tradition that goes way back for my family. We decided to have a neighborhood ice cream party. Twenty five years ago this year, my family went into the library and they were handing out ice cream cones to celebrate the birthday of the ice cream cone. My dad thought that it would be a great thing for our family to do for our neighborhood. Italo Marchiony was the first person to recieve a patent for an ice cream cone maker so my family has celebrated on Sept. 22nd, the day he made his first ice cream cone, ever since. Our family would create flyers each year and pass them out to our neighbors. My dad would serve ice cream, do magic tricks, have contests, and have a great time with all the neighbor kids. I loved it because it was a big party with all my friends. Each year it got bigger and bigger and now the city of Kaysville, UT has taken over the tradition. My dad even won a contest one year from the Dreyers Ice Cream company where they supplied all the ice cream for the party. My dad still usually goes and reads stories to the kids or shows them tricks.

This year we decided to start our own tradition. The girls and I trucked around the neighborhood for an hour introducing ourselves to many neighbors who we hadn't met before and invited them to our ice cream party. We served about 60 ice cream cones and had a great time. The kids rode bikes and played together and the adults all got to visit and get to know each other better. In today's world where we are all so busy and many of us don't even know the people that live next door, it was so gratifying to see everyone visiting and enjoying themselves. So many people commented on how fun it was and what a great idea it was. We'll be sure to continue our tradition next year.
