Our last day of sight seeing included the whole family. We started out at the National Archives seeing the Magna Carta, the Declaration of Independence, and the Constitution. No photography is allowed, but this was one of the highlights of the trip for me. To see those actual documents and realize what they meant to a new nation gave me chills. So many men gave so much to give us our independence and the freedoms we have today.
We decided to experience the D.C. metro system this day. It was quite amusing to get all 12 of us on and off the trains quickly. One time, Aunt Jill almost didn't make it in time. The door started closing on her. Ben was right there and helped pry the door open, but it was a little scary.
All in one elevator with 3 strollers!
Waiting for the metro. What a group.
We stopped for lunch at this museum that had a statue representing each of the animals in the Chinese Zodiac in a circle around a fountain. This is a big thing for our family. Every year, Grandma Judy gives the grandkids something that represents the animal for that year. We took a picture with each person near their animal. I plan to do some creative project with them. Tucker and Mackenzie in front of the rat.
The year of the rabbit!
We wanted to see the Bureau of Engraving but it required tickets which weren't available until later that evening so we moved on to visiting Arlington Cemetery. Everyone was tired, but we made the trek to see the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the changing of the guard. This was probably Ben's favorite part of the trip. The area is silent and the guards are so precise.
The seemingly endless sea of tombstones.
A beautiful tribute to all those who have died so we can remain free.
We had a great trip and were so sad to leave. Dan and Jill were great hosts and we can't wait to see them again!
