This year I've been volunteering in the school library periodically by reading to Mackenzie and Alyssa's classes. I feel reading is so important so I love to take the opportunity to read books to the kids. It also helps me get to know the kids in each of my kids classes. Kira comes with me and loves to feel like a big girl sitting on the carpet and listening to the books. She doesn't sit still the whole time, but it's a good opportunity for her to practice as well.
This year one of the days I was volunteering happened to be on Chinese New Year. Kira and I both got all dressed up in our Chinese clothes for the day. I didn't get a picture of us together, but I think Kira looked so cute in her Chinese dress. We first talked with the kids about some of the traditions of Chinese New Year and how each year is named for a different animal. We then read a book that the library had that told the fable of how the Chinese years came to be named after animals. Then we read a book that we have at home called The Runaway Wok. Each of the girls got to pass out little red lucky envelopes with a piece of candy inside to their friends in class. It was a fun way for the girls to share some of their family heritage with their friends.
