Media Room

We've been talking for a while about changing a few things in our house that would make it more functional for us.  We had a contractor come and give us a bid last year and found there were a few things we hadn't realized would be needed in order to convert some of our attic space off of the bonus room into a media room like a new air conditioning unit.  We decided to wait a few more months to make sure we were ready to make the plunge.  In January, we interviewed three contractors and found one we really like.  We decided to use Tyson Kunz with TTK Home.  He's an owner/contractor so he was on site almost every day working.  They started work framing the attic space on Feb. 12th.  Here are a few pictures of the progression. This isn't necessarily day by day since a few steps have taken more than one day to complete and there have been days when we haven't had workers here.

Step 1:  Prep and framing.
The guys first laid down this cardboard strip and plastic going up the stairs.  For several weeks Kira has been too scared to step on it.  She just stands at the top or the bottom of the stairs and grunts for us to pick her up.

The supplies and debris in the bonus room after the first day.
The guys had to raise the floor and put framing along the back wall.  We had about 4 guys here for a few days for this first phase.
Debris after a few more days!  I got to keep a few scraps of wood for future craft projects.

Step 2: Drywall along the back and side walls.

 A better view.

Step 3: Insulation. Nice and sound proof for the movies.

 Step 4: Drywall and mudding.

Step 5: Texturizing media room walls and framing bonus room wall.
 Left wall.
Right wall. You can see the cabinet that is going to be open on top for the audiovisual equipment and then be a closed cabinet below for movies on the bottom.  We're getting a new sectional that will go along the back wall and wrap around this corner.  It comes with an oversized ottoman for extra comfort.  The circles on the wall is where the light sconces will go.

The wall closing off the bonus room.  This is the view coming upstairs.  They put this up in a couple of days and had it drywalled fast.  It is really helping with the dust that gets everywhere downstairs.
A view of inside the bonus room looking into the future closet on the left.  We had an existing closet (inside) which will stay.  That white door you see will be moved out to be the outside closet door and they're going to add a light and shelves inside so we'll have lots of storage for games and toys.

Step 6:  Paint

The walls are Sherwin Williams Hopsack, the ceiling is Latte and the accent wall is a deeper version of Smokehouse.  I didn't know this, but you can ask Sherwin Williams to lighten or darken a color.  I thought the Smokehouse wasn't dark enough, and the guy custom mixed the formula to make it a deeper gray.  I loved it! You can also see one of the sconces up
and the ceiling fan.  This darker wall is where the TV will go.  The holes in the wall are for the surround sound speakers.

It's really coming along quickly now.  Carpet is ordered and will come in another week.  Hopefully in 2 weeks we'll be done!
